Election Coverage

  • Candidates Diverge on How to Save Social Security
Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are both proposing dramatic changes to Social Security, taking on the financially fragile "third rail of American politics" that Congress and recent presidents have been unable to repair.

  • Plane Glitch Grounds Obama in St. Louis
CHARLOTTE, July 7 -- In a strikingly literal detour from his message of the day, Sen. Barack Obama found himself stuck in St. Louis on Monday, phoning in remarks to an audience here after his campaign plane was forced to land following a mechanical glitch midair.

  • McCain Says He Would Balance Budget by 2013
Sen. John McCain pledged yesterday that he would balance the federal budget by 2013, the end of what would be his first term in office, returning to a promise he had strayed from as he sought to emphasize his concern about the plight of the U.S. economy.

Temple University College Democrats

The Temple Democrats are a chapter of the Pennsylvania State Federation of College Democrats and the College Democrats of America - and as it says at the bottom of every page, the college outreach arm of the DNC itself. What does all that mean? It means that what we do matters. We are party members and we have an impact on the party today, as well as in the future.

We meet in the Student Center room 223 on Thursday nights at 5:30 p.m. We also hold at least one event per week, which could be anything from a movie night to a trip to the Daily Show. Our members are involved in the Temple community, as well as the larger Philadelphia community, with speakers, campaigns, protests, and much needed community service.

PA State Dems Convention
From April 11-13, Temple University will host the PA College Democrats statewide convention. If you would like to attend this event, please register here. The registration fee for convention is $40. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow democrats from across the state and political leaders.

The silence is coming.
April 25th, is National Day of Silence (NDoS).  NDoS is an annual day of action to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, and their supporters. Students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their supporters.

In conjunction with the national event, Temple Common Ground, Temple Feminist Majority, and Temple College Democrats will be holding a demonstration at the Bell Tower along with other student organizations.  We will have information and education about homophobia and what you can do to combat it.

If you wish to participate in this event, speaking cards will be available at the Bell Tower for you to take to your classes.

Please understand our reasons for not speaking today. We are participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies. Our deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. We believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

What are you going to do to end the silence?
